A look at Boeing's new North Charleston-made 787-10

Workers walk through the Boeing South Carolina Plant in North Charleston South Carolina

U.S. President Donald Trump, in office less than a month, looked to be on the campaign trail again Friday as he toured a massive Boeing aircraft facility in SC.

Boeing won 74 percent of ballots cast, according to the statement, with over 2,800 of the roughly 3,000 eligible employees voting. "Management will have to pay attention, because it will happen in other plants", he said. National Labor Relations Board rules require workers wait a year before another union vote.

President Donald Trump pledged to fight for American jobs in a speech to Boeing workers in Charleston, South Carolina, at the unveiling of a new 787-10 Dreamliner.

The president plans to hold a campaign-style rally in Melbourne, Fla., at 5 p.m.

Workers at a Boeing plant in SC have rejected an effort by the Machinists to unionize a plant.

"I'm going to do everything I can to unleash the power of the American spirit and to put our great people back to work", Mr Trump told a crowd of workers at the plant, with the presidential aircraft and the new Boeing jet behind him. He has denounced the costs as "out of control". Representing Boeing will be its Chairman and CEO Dennis Muilenburg, along with its Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Kevin McAllister. Workers who are too scared to attend public actions, like the meagerly attended rally the Machinists organized two days before the election, are not going to rally their co-workers to vote for a union. Go to a Red state, and deliver a speech about jobs. The global aviation giant, which came to SC in part because of the state's minuscule union presence, did so with the aid of millions of dollars in state assistance made possible by officials who spoke out frequently and glowingly with anti-union messages.

It's also a win for the company that will host President Donald Trump at its North Charleston facilities Friday. As long as the bidding for these projects is competitive and transparent - and as long as prohibitions are in place against self-dealing on the part of the politicians handing them out - we're fine.

At least that part of the tactic has worked.

The event drew a sampling of South Carolina's GOP elite, including U.S. Reps. State officials consistently tout this as one of the major reasons the state is attractive for manufacturing.

But it is not the job of taxpayers in SC - or anywhere in America - to subsidize speculative commercial product offerings like the Dreamliner.

SC has the lowest union representation in the country, at only 1.6 percent.

"If they get a foothold in a plant that size, that may help in efforts to expand beyond that location", South Carolina Manufacturers Alliance president Lewis Gossett said before the vote.

Boeing has orders for 149 of the newest Dreamliner model - which are constructed exclusively at Boeing's SC facility - from countries across the globe, making it a model for the kind of high-value, made-in-America exports at the heart of Trump's economic promises.
